Interactive spaces
A course on Interactive Spaces in the Graphic Design BA program at Abadir, Catania.
Course objectives
The course focuses on designing interactive experiences in physical spaces using sensors and transforming data into audiovisual outputs.
The final output will be a collaborative audiovisual installation that integrates the work of all students. The primary medium will be screens or projectors, with interactivity triggered by keyboards, mice, microphones, and other input devices.
Methodology
The initial phase introduces students to p5.js, a JavaScript library for creative coding designed for artists and designers. Through theoretical lessons and exercises, students will familiarize themselves with the library before developing installations via an iterative process of prototyping and feedback.
Each student will work on one or more individual projects based on the skills gained with p5.js. The final installation will feature a curated selection of these projects.
Topics and Structure
-
2024/25 – The course will center on the theme of water, emphasizing individual sensory perception to translate those sensations into audiovisual expressions.
-
2023/24 – The project will take place in Parco Paternò del Toscano, where students will design interactive installations offering unique perspectives on nature and the park itself.
-
2022/23 – The course focused on themes such as surveillance, data, and privacy in both physical and digital contexts. The starting point is a series of interviews with prisoners, from which students will extract key elements to reinterpret and integrate into their projects.
